How to Store and Organize Shoes in a Closet

So, you have just finished hanging up your shirts, dresses, tunics, and jackets, and you have placed them together by color and length of the garment, and everything looks fantastic; then you turn around–behind you lies a pile of shoes. Where are you going to put them all?

Storing and organizing shoes in a closet can be a tricky business. If you have multiple types of shoes, like tall boots and flip-flops, you will need different storage methods. You also want your shoes to be organized and have the same sense of cleanliness and defined placement as the rest of your clothing.

If you’re looking for a few tips on how to organize your closet, we’ve curated some simple, easily implemented ideas. One or more of these will work for every shape and size of a closet–all you’ll need to do is decide which is best for yours. Read on!

Shelves in the Closet

One of the most versatile, organized, and well-loved methods for organizing shoes in a closet is to use shelves. The wonderful thing about shelves is that they are customizable–you can place them wherever you have space and use as many or as few as you need. Here are some ways to use them:

  • Place a shelf above your hanging clothes at the top of the closet and line up your shoes there. Bonus tip: color-coordinate shoes on the shelf so that your light-colored shoes are above your light-colored clothes and vice versa.

  • Insert a shelf or two just above the floor of the closet. Place your shoes on the floor, beneath the shelf, and on it.

  • Use a bookshelf or other standing shelf and place it in the middle of the closet or on one side or corner. Line up your shoes on each shelf; if you have extra space, you can use the upper shelves for handbags or hats.

  • Maximize space by placing shoe shelves wherever you can in the closet. For instance, set a shelf near the floor and another on top of the hanging clothes, and store your shoes in both spots.

  • Use angled shoe shelves to display shoes and maximize depth in the closet.

Wall Storage

If you just don’t have any space for shelves, this next idea is a space-saver–wall and door storage. Shoe racks that hang on the inside of closet doors are easy to find and can make organizing shoes a breeze. The only issue is that they can’t hold tall boots, so if you use them, place boots on the closet floor or on a shelf at the top.

There are also stand-alone shoe racks, wall racks, and wall hooks. These can be placed on an open closet wall as an alternative to shelves and will take up less space. For a very minimalistic look, attach hooks to the wall and hang your shoes on them.

Cubbies in the Closet or Out

Lastly, for those who love the look of highly defined spaces for things, you’ll love the idea of cubbies for shoes. Cubbies are akin to shelves, but they separate pairs of shoes, making them perfect if multiple people store their shoes in the same closet or if you just like definition.

Like shelves, you can put cubbies anywhere in the closet, but floor placement is most common. Additionally, if space is limited, you can place a cubby outside the closet and store your shoes there.
